From the College Archive: a short film - opening of Queen's Wing by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in May 1957

Photo: Queen Mother at the 1957 Queens Wing Opening at Homerton College.Queen’s Wing was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 29 May 1957.  You are now able to view a film made of this event which has been made available from the College archives.

The film starts with College preparations for the visit and the gathering of local dignitaries, University officials, College staff and students, and school children from the local Morley Primary School. The Queen Mother arrives to much excitement. She then takes an informal tour of the College accompanied by the Principal, Miss Skillicorn, and the Senior Student of the College. The tour includes an exhibition of students' arts and crafts, and the Queen Mother is presented with a beautiful woven stole made by a second year student.

Luncheon follows in the Great Hall.  Guests are then seen gathering in a marquee on the Terrace Lawn and the Queen Mother declares the New Wing open. After this she is taken to see some students’ rooms on the first floor of the newly opened building.

The College flag is drawn to one side to reveal an inscription commemorating the ceremony. Finally, the Mayor accompanies the Queen Mother to the main gate for the farewell.

New Publications

Dr Peter Cunningham's Politics and the Primary Teacher is newly published by Routledge.

Primary teachers deploy an impressive array of knowledge and skills in their work. A rewarding job but one that makes huge demands, it has been increasingly in the political and spotlight. This new book encourages and supports primary teachers in reflecting critically on the politics of the important work they do.

Professor Jim Campbell describes the book a "A distinctive and much needed analysis of primary teaching as political activity, Dr Cunningham's new book is scholarly and stunningly well written." Professor Maurice Galton calls it "A must read for anyone concerned for our children's wellbeing."

A Green Christmas...

Over the Christmas Vacation there was a planned major power shutdown to enable a "voltage optimisation unit" to be fitted to the electricity supplies for the Cavendish Building (inc. ABC, DE, administration, IT and Catering areas), The Ibberson Building, Queens Wing, East House and South Court. The unit fitted is designed and manufactured by a company called Power Perfector, this is one of the ways the college is tackling our carbon reduction and reducing our energy consumption; if you’d like to know more follow the PowerPerfector link.

A Busy Break...

The facilities staff have been very busy over the Christmas Vacation, particularly with refurbishment to the ABC accommodation; all the rooms have been redecorated, and new floors and doors fitted to the ensuite shower rooms.

Jean Rudduck Bursaries

JEAN RUDDUCK BURSARIES (for former members of Homerton College who are practising teachers)

Are you a practising teacher? Trying to find time and space to finish a project? Undertaking research?

Homerton offers bursaries to former members who would like to return to Cambridge for a couple of weeks to use the libraries, work with colleagues in the College or various Faculties of the University or simply write and think.

We know how difficult it can be to quarry time out of a professional or domestic regime - most people seem to work at midnight on the kitchen table. However, we can help. The late Jean Rudduck, Professor of Education and Fellow of Homerton, did so much to help teachers and pupils find a voice and we intend to use part of a fund set up in her memory to enable former Homertonians to have time for further study and to write.

We can offer bursaries for up to two weeks to cover the cost of bed and board at Homerton, membership of the Senior Combination Room, access to libraries and IT services and some travel. We cannot stretch to cover classroom replacement so you may wish to use such an opportunity at half-term or in the school holidays. A bursary can be split over two week-long half-terms or even taken piecemeal up to the equivalent of 14 nights stay. There are no constraints on what Jean Rudduck scholars might choose to do. The only criteria for eligibility are that you should be a practising teacher and that you can define your purpose for being in Cambridge to study. We hope to be able to take scholars at any time of year but may be a bit tight on space in the Michaelmas Term.

To apply, please send a short statement of your proposed research and a copy of your CV to Dr Kate Pretty, Principal, Homerton College, Hills Road, Cambridge, CB2 8PH.

New Book To Celebrate Homerton's Charter Year

Homerton: The Evolution Of A Cambridge College

edited by Dr Peter Raby and Dr Peter Warner

Photo: Greast Hall with lavendar in the foreground

This substantial book of some 70,000 words and 180 illustrations was published in November 2010. It celebrates a significant moment in the long history of Homerton College, with the granting of a Royal Charter by Her Majesty the Queen and the College’s simultaneous change from Approved Society to full collegiate status within the University of Cambridge.

The book offers a snapshot of life in the College in 2010 and explores aspects of our shared heritage and evolution. The most substantial chapter records, through the voice and memory of our alumni, the distinctive experiences of being a student at Homerton from the 1950’s to the present day.

Homerton; the evolution of a Cambridge College has a forward by Sir David Harrison, for many years Chair of Trustees, and a perspective by the Principal, Dr Kate Pretty CBE. It is edited by Dr Peter Raby, a former Vice-Principal and Dr Peter Warner, Senior Tutor. The book is generously illustrated with contemporary photographs combined with images from the Homerton Archives, many of which have never previously been published. Chapters range from: the new Fellowship and their research, sport and rowing, the significance of the Charter to the governance of the College, to memories of Homerton being bombed during the Second World War, the Leyton Orient connection, reflections of the College gardens, drama, art and music.

The book retails for £24.00 (including pp @ £4.00 in UK), or for £20 if purchased from the Porters’ Lodge at Homerton.

CHEQUES SHOULD BE MADE OUT TO ‘HOMERTON COLLEGE’ – please complete the order form with your full address details and send to:
