Before embarking on an academic career, Theo spent 15 years working in industry. His early career involved traditional Civil engineering, including geotechnical and structural design, construction and project management. He became specialised in environmental engineering and over time the focus of his work broadened to cover environmental management and sustainable development in a corporate context. His area of particular expertise became the social and environmental impact assessment of major projects. From 2003 to 2006 he took a career break to undertake research towards a PhD at Cambridge, which involved an investigation into the 'Sustainability Assessment' of mining projects. After another short stint working in industry, Theo returned to Cambridge’s Engineering Department in 2008 as a Senior Research Associate. In this role he oversaw the establishment of an industry-funded research programme into energy efficiency in the built environment, and supervised research by Master's and PhD students. In 2010 he moved to the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership, a Department within the School of Technology, where he oversees a portfolio of part-time graduate programmes that covers topic relating to business and sustainability.
