Sciences Summer School

You are here

Dates of not yet been set for our 2018 Summer Schools, please check back later for details.

As part of our Sciences Summer School students experience sample lectures and seminars, lab practicals, and a supervision. Students follow either the biological sciences track (including biology, chemistry and the medical sciences), or the physical sciences track (including physics, maths, computer science, and engineering). There is also guidance on admissions and interviews, and the chance for students to explore the city of Cambridge for themselves.

There is no charge for the food, accommodation or activities, in other words the summer school is free of charge. Travel bursaries are available for students who come from a household with an income of £25,000 or below.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • be in year 12 or equivalent (home UK only)
  • attend a state school or college (applications will also be considered from students who are on a widening participation scholarship to an independent school)
  • have achieved at least 5 A/A*s at GCSE or equivalent, and be on track for achieving the grades to make a competetive application to Cambridge
  • be taking relevant subjects in relation to the subject stream they are applying for, if applicable

In addition, priority will be given to applicants who meet the following criteria, though this is not a prerequisite to applying:

  • the first generation in their family to attend university
  • eligible for free school meals and/or pupil premium
  • attend schools or colleges with a low overall A-level, Higher/Advanced Higher (or equivalent) point score and/or schools or colleges with low progression to higher education
  • who are (or have been) looked after, accommodated or in care who will only need to meet the study year and academic requirements.

Please note that we will not accept applications to the summer schools from students who have already applied to university.
