Homerton Shadow Scheme 2019
Applications for the 2019 Shadow Scheme are now closed. Please check back later for details of the 2020 scheme.
The Homerton Union of Students Shadow Scheme aims to give students from underrepresented backgrounds an experience of what it is like to be at a university such as Cambridge. We invite high-achieving year 12 students from state-maintained schools in our link areas to come and stay at Homerton College for two nights. At Homerton they will be paired with a ‘mentor’ — a friendly and responsible current Homerton student who studies a subject they are interested in. This student will be DBS-checked. The school student will ‘shadow’ the mentor for the duration of their time here by accompanying them to lectures and classes. The mentor is also there to answer any questions about university and Cambridge and to describe their experience thus far. We will also provide extra-curricular activities to get involved with to provide a broad taster of university life, and to ensure it’s also a fun experience for the students.
The scheme will take place between Thursday 21st and Saturday 23rd February 2019. We aim to make the experience completely free for students –we will pay for accommodation, food, and other expenses, so no shadow student needs to worry about money. Travel bursaries are available for students for whom this would be a barrier to attending, this will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
In terms of eligible applicants, we are looking for students who are from families with no/very little experience of university, who attend a state-maintained school in one of our link areas (Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham in South Yorkshire; Buckinghamshire; and the London boroughs of Hounslow, Kingston and Richmond) and who have the potential to achieve A*AA or above in their A-Levels. If we are over-subscribed with students who fulfil the above criteria and whose subject of interest matches with one of our mentors, priority will go to students who meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Currently or has ever been in care
- No parent/guardian has attended University
- Currently eligible for Free School Meals
- Only one parent/guardian has attended University
To apply for the scheme, we would ask students to fill out the online form and for teachers to give a short reference in support of the student, which they should email to email@example.com. The deadline for this application is Monday 10th December 2018.
A CUSU (Cambridge University Students' Union) Shadowing Scheme already exists, which your school may have been involved with. Our Homerton scheme is independent from this, though it is largely based on CUSU’s model.
We believe that this experience benefits students by providing an insight into life at Cambridge to students who would not otherwise have such an opportunity. We’ve had very positive feedback from previous years and hope that we can continue to inspire students and encourage them to strive towards their full potential. If you are a student who meets our eligibiltiy criteria, we would be delighted if you would consider applying, and if you are a teacher at a school in one of our link areas, we would strongly encourage you to advertise this opportunity to your students. Please feel free to email Yama Latif, HUS Target and Access Officer, at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions you may have.
