Student Profiles

Allison Williams:  M.Phil in Egyptology

I am from Montreal, Quebec in Canada, studying Egyptology with the Department of Archaeology.  I chose Homerton as my first choice college.  I was looking for a quiet area with a large ground, a self-catering facility with the option to eat at hall, and a private study bedroom with en suite.  Living in Harrison House, one of the graduate residences, offers all these things!  The college offers students a more casual, caring and supportive environment. Coming from abroad, I was looking to really experience the college feel and Homerton does just that by having a great support system and also a fun and easy going social network, that makes meeting new people very easy.  As an international student, that was a huge bonus for me.  Living in Homerton gives me the chance to study and have a great social life, the perfect balance any grad student could wish for!

Constanze Hammerle: PhD with the Department of Biochemistry

When I was accepted for my PhD, I was not yet familiar with the college system of the University.  I hail from Austria and all I knew so far of colleges was impacted (and surely mystified) by the Harry Potter books - the four houses of Hogwarts seemed somewhat comparable to the idea and it sure sounded exciting!  Homerton, with its wonderful grounds and beautiful buildings, being named 'the friendliest college' of all, quickly moved to the top of my list.  The academic year started with a blast - I had the chance to get to know most of my fellow graduates during Freshers' Week, which was great fun and the very elegant matriculation dinner in the Greall Hall ranks among my most impressive experiences;  candlelight, a silver horn to drink out of and inspiring conversations with fellow students from all fields.  I have been to many Formall Hall dinners afterwards and they feel special every time,  Whether it is rowing for my college or inviting friends over to show them around, college bops or the very modern library, I am happy about being part of Homerton.  Cambridge is a wonderful place to study and Homerton, even though I live out, has indeed become very homely for me.

Naushad Moti: PhD with the Department of Pathology

I am Naushad Moti, a 3rd Year PhD student.  I got connected with Homerton in 2008 after completing my Masters in Biotechnology from the University of Karachi, Pakistan.  At first, I didn't know much about the college.  Homerton was not my college preference at the time of application, but after getting into this college, I came to know that Homerton has lots to offer me as a student.  For me, Homerton has the best student counselling services, whether it's personal or professional.  As a student from a country whose education system is very different, I had to face a few troubles in settling into the UK society and the college helped and advised me a lot. During my stay, I have enjoyed the best possible accommodation in Cambridge.  Homerton has also helped me in getting travel grants to help present my PhD data at EACR 2010 held in Oslo, Norway.  On the whole, Homerton College has been a fascinating experience of my life and I would like to be in touch with the college for the rest of my life.

Florian Wanner:  MBA, Judge Business School

I was placed to a college by the Judge Business School and I am glad that I am now a member.  Staff and students are very friendly and helpful and the MCR organise a lot.  I enjoyed the Freshers' week very much; it is an excellent opportunity to get to know other college members. Last but not least, Harrison House offers very convenient accommodation and a very close-knit graduate community.

Eusi Anderson:  M.Phil in Education

I am Eusi Anderson and I am from Guyana.  I am currently pursuing a one year Masters in Education, specialising in Politics, Development and Democratic Education.  I appreciate the experience at Homerton.  The pastoral services are unrivalled and access to study rooms on the weekend or a very quiet, modern and well-stocked library is what sets Homerton apart.  A very large football field and expanses of green are there for fitness enthusiasts and those seeking a quiet walk alike.  The Porters - the people who watch over you if you happen to be fortunate enough to live in halls- will look over you in sickness and in health, as I personally have experienced.  Homerton is a modern college with pleasant staff, approachable Principal and Senior Officers and excellent food!

Wei Yang: PhD in Metabolic Science

My name is Wei Yang and I am studying and doing research in the Institute of Metabolic Science at Addenbrooke's Hospital.  Homerton was my choice in the first place since it is nearest to the Addenbrooke's site where I work. Since I became a member last September, I am gradually in love with this place.  I enjoy the accommodation in Queen's Wing where I made friends; we are all of different backgrounds, but live harmoniously and share our diverse experience.  The main attraction to me of Homerton is its fabulous library, which holds a good collection of books and journals of a vast range of subjects. I am very proud of being a Homertonian.

Zengbin Zhou:  MBA,  Judge Business School

I'm from Beijing, China doing the MBA progam.  We were not given a college choice, and I was assigned to Homerton.  I am glad, as Homerton have been very helpful in sorting out my accommodation arrangements.  I was able to collect my card, keys and welcome pack and move into Harrison House with ease.  I think the college offers us great facilities (my favourite is the spacious library and football field), a strong cultural atmosphere (lots happening from choir, to theatre, to literature appreciation) and a homley feel.

Trevor Dunn:  Master of Education (part-time)

I am a Chartered Psychologist and am currently Head of Psychology at The Leys in Cambridge.  I am studying on the part-time MEd in Psychology & Education and my area of interest and current research is Teacher Stress.  I am attached to Homerton, which is a very friendly college, and there is always someone willing to talk to about your studies and life in general, and it is a very supportive environment.

Kannal Achuthan:  M.Phil in Education

I'm Kannal Achuthan from India.  I'm delighted to be in Homerton College sandwiched between its library, with a vast collection of children's books and criticism on one side and the Education Faculty library on the other.  Homerton is a spacious college and I like walking on its grounds.  Graduates have their own friendly MCR and I enjoy my interactions with the college staff.
