Subjects

Cambridge courses cover their subjects very broadly in the initial years and then become more specialised and offer a wide range of options as the course progresses. Yet despite this initial broad character, Cambridge graduates are expected to achieve the same standard and depth in their final year as graduates from courses elsewhere which may begin in a much more narrowly focused way. This is because: There's no doubt that Cambridge courses offer a very tough challenge, but our students relish this. We demand a lot, but we have a good deal to offer: expert teachers and lecturers; excellent library and computing facilities; superb labs; lots of support, both academically and, through our tutorial provision, personally as well.
Most students take courses in one subject area throughout their degree course, following their Part 1 course in a Tripos with Part II in the same Tripos (and remember there is nothing mysterious about the word 'tripos' - it's just the way we refer to the subject areas such as History, Archaeology and Anthropology, Computer Science, Natural Sciences etc and their examinations). However it is possible to change Tripos after Part I or Part IA. Most changes are between related fields: within the science areas or within the arts, but switching between broad areas is also possible, and a wide range of subject combinations is therefore available. This allows a remarkable degree of flexibility, but such changes need to be thought about very carefully, and you will need the agreement of your Director of Studies both that any such change is in your educational interests, and also that you have the necessary background in the subject to which you wish to change.
