This substantial book of some 70,000 words and 180 illustrations was published in November 2010. It celebrates a significant moment in the long history of Homerton College, with the granting of a Royal Charter by Her Majesty the Queen and the College’s simultaneous change from Approved Society to full collegiate status within the University of Cambridge.
The book offers a snapshot of life in the College in 2010 and explores aspects of our shared heritage and evolution. The most substantial chapter records, through the voice and memory of our alumni, the distinctive experiences of being a student at Homerton from the 1950’s to the present day.
Homerton; the evolution of a Cambridge College has a foreword by Sir David Harrison, for many years Chair of Trustees, and a perspective by the Principal, Dr Kate Pretty CBE. It is edited by Dr Peter Raby, a former Vice-Principal and Dr Peter Warner, Senior Tutor. The book is generously illustrated with contemporary photographs combined with images from the Homerton Archives, many of which have never previously been published. Chapters range from: the new Fellowship and their research, sport and rowing, the significance of the Charter to the governance of the College, to memories of Homerton being bombed during the Second World War, the Leyton Orient connection, reflections of the College gardens, drama, art and music.
The book retails for £24.00 (including pp @ £4.00 in UK), or for £20 if purchased from the Porters’ Lodge at Homerton.
