Campus Manager Process

Campus Manager IconThere are 3 Networks you will encounter when registering for the ResNet service for the first time. These are:

  • Network Only Small Icon Registration
  • Quarantine Small Icon Quarantine - Restricted Internet Access
  • Internet Small Icon Live - Full Access

Registration Network

Network Only IconAll new computers, when they connect to ResNet for the first time, are placed into the Registration Network. From here you will be asked to accept the Homerton College IT Security Policy and logon with your ResNet details (given to you on Registration Day). You will also be asked for your Room and phone details. This is to allow the IT Department to identify you and your computer and contact you if there are any problems.

Once you have done this you will be asked to install the Bradford Persistent Agent. Step by step instructions on installing or uninstalling the agent can be found here. On installing the agent, it will scan your computer to make sure that you have the latest Security Updates and fixes for your machine as well as having the necessary programs installed (i.e. University of Cambridge version of Mcafee Anti-Virus). After the scan has completed, you will either be moved to a live ResNet connection, or to the quarantine network.

Quarantine Network

Quarantine Icon

In the event that your computer fails one or more of the security checks that were undertaken during registration, it will automatically be placed into the quarantine network, allowing you to make your computer safe and secure before being moved to a live ResNet connection. Whilst in the quarantine network, you can view your security scan results by opening your internet browser. If you are not directed to the results page, you should try accessing a web page you have not been to before (i.e. www.123456.com), as your homepage may be cached locally. By clicking on the links provided in the results page, you will be given step-by-step instructions on how to secure your computer. Below the results is a button "Re-scan", clicking this after taking corrective action will invoke another security scan.

Live Network

Internet IconOnce you have met the requirements for connection, you will be moved to a live ResNet connection. Here you will have access to the Internet and be able to browse its content in accordance with the IT Security Policy which you have previously agreed to.

Please note that your computer is periodically checked for security flaws and breaches of policy, on the event that the persistent agent detects a critical problem, you will be moved into the quarantine network, allowing you to take corrective action.

Dead End Network

In some special cases you may find that you have no connection at all and when you open your Internet browser all you get is a page stating that you have been placed in Dead End. Dead end is a 4th Network within Campus Manager that is only used in certain circumstances.

You can end up in the Dead End Network for a number of reasons.

Some of these are as follows:

  • Computer Misconfiguration (e.g. incorrect Host Name).
  • If this happens you will receive 2 emails from IT Support over a set period of time letting you know that your machine is incorrectly configured along with steps on how to rectify this. If you fail to respond to these emails then your machine will have been placed in Dead End and an email sent to you telling you what you need to do. Once you have it configured correctly and have advised the IT Department of this then your connection will be reinstated for you.
  • Using the system contrary to the guidelines of the IT Security Policy (using Peer-to-Peer or other software that is prohibited on ResNet at Homerton)
  • If this is the case you will have been sent 2 emails advising you that you are in breach of the IT Security Policy and why. Failure to respond to these emails and remove the prohibited software will result in a 3rd and final email being sent to you advising you that your connection has been terminated, why, and you will be asked to come and see the IT Department before it is re-instated. If when it is re-instated you continue to abuse the Network then your connection will be terminated permanently and the matter reported to the Dean.
  • Unpaid Bill/Opted Out.
  • If for some reason your College Bill is not paid your connection to the ResNet Service may become suspended until such time as your account is cleared. Similarly if you decide you do not want to partake of the ResNet Service in your room any attempt to connect to ResNet will mean that you are placed in the Dead End Network.
  • You may also have your connection suspended/terminated as part of a loss of privileges for a totally non-IT related matter you are involved in. When this happens you will be notified that your connection has been removed and why and when/if it will be reinstated.
