Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I access ResNet wirelessly?
Amongst these are:
- South Court
- Mary Allen Building
- Harrison House
- Cavendish — IT Department
- HUS Office
- Bar & Buttery
First of all check that your connection is live by looking at your network card on your machine and making sure that there is an orange or green light.
If the network card does have a light showing go back to Internet Explorer and try going to a page you have never been to before (e.g. www.123456.com). You should now see the relevant registration/quarantine page appear.
I am using Firefox as my Internet Browser and cannot get through Quarantine...
This is due to the fact that the Campus manager pages are designed for Internet Explorer and not Firefox at the moment. Use Internet Explorer in order to pass Quarantine and then once you have passed you can go back to using Firefox as your Internet Browser.
I have run through Quarantine and passed, rebooted my machine and I am still in Quarantine...
This is because for some reason the port in your room is not switching networks correctly and putting you into the Live Network. To fix this call the IT Department on 47109 and advise them of the situation and what room you are in.
Make sure you are using your ResNet password given to you at Registration and not your PWF or Hermes password. If you are sure you are using the right password your account may have become locked. To unlock this and have your password reset go to the Workshop in the Lower Computer Room and speak to one of the Technicians.
I am unable to access ResNet via wireless in my room...
ResNet is not available wirelessly in all the residential blocks at Homerton. It is available in Harrison House and South Court but not yet in the other blocks such as West House, East House etc.
These are installed automatically via the EPO (Electronic Policy Orchestrator) Agent which you install as part of the Quarantine process. Once you have installed it you will need to make sure you reboot your machine for it to take effect. After rebooting, leave your machine switched on and connected to the Network, and once a short amount of time has passed the EPO agent will contact the server and automatically pull down McAfee Virusscan and install it on your machine along with all the latest definition files and updates McAfee requires
Once VirusScan is installed the EPO agent will continue to constantly check with the server and download the newest McAfee Updates and Definitions as they appear.
I have failed Quarantine as it states “You have a Banned Application Installed” ?
This is because you have probably got some sort of Peer to Peer or Filesharing program installed on your machine (e.g. Azureus, Grokster, Limewire) which will need to be removed from your machine as they are not allowed on the resNet service at Homerton. If you are unsure what the banned application could be contact one of the IT Staff who will be able to take a look at your machine for you and advise you further.
When I try to install the Zotob Fix the Downloads page does not have it in my language...
If this is the case please contact one of the IT Staff and advise them of the language you require and they will be able to download this for you and add it to the Downloads page in Quarantine.
How do I change my password for ResNet?
Contact one of the IT Staff in the Workshop in the Lower Computer Room who will be able to do this for you. You will just need to bring your University Card as proof of your ID and know your CRSID.
I don't have a network cable/network card where can I get one from?
These are available from the HUS Office in Queens Wing. Please speak to one of the HUS Staff who will be able to advise you of prices etc.
Can I use
while connected to ResNet?
The use of Skype is not banned on the Homerton network, although you must be aware that the use of bandwidth hungry applications like Skype may cause you to exceed your network quota, please see the Fair Usage Policy here Please note that the allowing of Skype on ResNet is constantly under review and usage levels will be monitored, to help ensure it is not causing any detrimental affect to residents who are using the network for their academic studies and/or research.
Is there a limit to the amount I can download or upload?
