Remote Resources

The Computing Service within the University of Cambridge provides many central services that can be accessed from ResNet. Any computer with internet access, such as a home pc or cyber cafe computer can be used as well. There are three main services that ResNet users might not be aware of and could find useful.

iPrint

Allows users to print to the laser printers in the public computer rooms, very useful for printing high quality versions of assignments and reports from your accommodation. Users will need to have purchased print credit in advance. iPrint ensures that users can print documents quickly, easily, and reliably.

Using a Web browser, users point to a Web page that displays the available printers to install. iPrint IconBy clicking a printer, the iPrint client is installed (if not installed previously), the printer's driver is downloaded, and a printer is created on the user's workstation, enabling the user to send documents to the printer from any application on the desktop.

NetStorage

A facility for accessing and maintaining files within your PWF homespace over the internet. You can edit your work documents from your bedroom, or backup important documents from your laptop to your homespace (or vice versa). NetStorage LogoNetStorage allows you to edit your network based files whilst you are at home or on vacation.

With NetStorage, a user can securely access files from any Internet-enabled machine. A user can copy, move, rename, delete, read, write and recover files between a local workstation and the central servers. Access is available from any Internet-attached workstation, anywhere in the world. There is no need to e-mail or copy data from one machine to another.

Webmail

Hermes Webmail is a service which allows users to access their email using a Web browser. The Cambridge Webmail system provides secure access to email from any reasonably modern Web browser anywhere in the world. It is also required for changing passwords, forwarding or filtering mail, or setting up vacation messages.

The advantages of using webmail
  • Can be used securely from any reasonably modern Web browser anywhere in the world.
  • Hermes Webmail Image
  • Far simpler to use than any MUA based client
  • Functions as an IMAP client; that is, mail is kept on Hermes and not downloaded to the local machine. This is different from POP mail (as used by most commercial ISPs and available with most MUAs). IMAP is generally more convenient than POP for users who do not always use the same machine to read their mail.
