Library
Homerton College library is a modern, well stocked, open plan facility covering most academic subjects. Our main aim is to provide material supporting undergraduates taking Part 1 of the Cambridge Tripos.
We have a number of special collections, the most notable of which are the Children's Literature Collection and the Multimedia Collection (with DVDs, CDs and printed music - sets of parts are available for hire).
All College members can borrow from the library using their University card
- Up to 15 items
- 14 day loan period
- Items on loan to another reader can be reserved
- Loan renewals by email, telephone, online, or at the Library self-issue screens for items not overdue by more than 5 days
- Longer loan periods are provided for the holidays
- Fines may be charged in cases where specific recall notices are ignored
Members of other Colleges may apply for use of the library (and borrowing rights in some instances). Access will only be granted to those showing legitimate need to access the library's print resources. A maximum of 5 items can be borrowed by external users at one time.
Resources
Homerton College Library catalogue
The College library catalogue holds records for all items kept in the Library. It can be accessed at http://heritage.homerton.cam.ac.uk/. You can login to review your account, place reservations and renew your books.
Newton catalogue and LibrarySearch
Homerton is also a contributor to the University Library (UL) catalogue known as Newton http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/newton/. Newton is the combined online catalogue for the libraries of the University and is divided into a number of databases. If you want to search multiple libraries for an item, try using LibrarySearch http://search.lib.cam.ac.uk, which searches across all of Newton at once. Please note that not all of Homerton's items are currently accessible on either of these catalogues and they do not show availability of our items.
Ejournals, ebooks and online databases
The University provides full text access to academic ejournals, ebooks and over 400 online databases. These can be accessed on campus (and off campus with a Raven password) via http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/eresources/
Wifi
The library, in common with most of the College, offers eduroam Wifi access.
Photocopying, Printing and Scanning
A photocopier is situated on Floor 1 (there are also photocopiers in the IT Department and the HUS Office). All are operated by pre-purchased non-reusable cards. The cards are sold at the Porter's Lodge for £5, giving around 70 copies. A card can also be borrowed from library staff during working hours at a cost of 10p per sheet.
The library has a laser printer for colour and mono printing accessible from your own laptop (http://www.ucs.cam.ac.uk/destop-services/ds-print/individual) or the managed desktop workstations. Two A4 scanners are also available.
Naxos Music Library
We offer access to the Naxos Music Library, an online music listening service with over 50,000 titles streamed in near CD quality to your computer (off campus access is provided with a password from the Library). Please ask a member of staff for details on how to access the service. More information on Naxos is available at http://www.naxosmusiclibrary.com
Arrangement of the Library
Items are arranged on our shelves using Dewey Decimal Classification from 001-999. Books are shelved in numerical order, including any decimal points, and then alphabetically by the letters on the spine. Letters followed by a slash and more letters come at the end of any particular sequence. For example:
123 BAR
123.1 BAR
123.1 BAR/DRY
123.17 BAR
123.3 BAR
Please ask a member of staff if you need help to location an item.
