About the Library

Homerton College library is a modern, well stocked, open plan facility covering most academic subjects.  Our main aim is to provide material supporting undergraduates taking Part 1 of the Cambridge Tripos for all the subjects offered by Homerton, but we welcome all members of the College, including postgraduates, Fellows and staff.

We have a number of special collections, the most notable of which are the Children's Literature Collection and the Multimedia Collection (with DVDs, CDs and printed music - sets of parts are available for hire).

Using the Library

  • All College members can borrow from the Library using their University card. College members can borrow up to 15 items at a time, for 14 days. For a guide to borrowing from the library, renewing, reserving and returning items, please see our user guide.
  • Members of other Colleges may apply for use of the Library. Usually this will be reference access. Borrowing rights may be granted to those with a legitimate need and up to 5 items can be borrowed by external users at a time.

Library catalogues

Heritage

The College library online catalogue (Heritage) holds records for all items kept in the Library including our special collections. The classmark of the book will be listed on Heritage, which you can then use to find the item on the shelves of the Library. You can also login at home or at College to review your account, place reservations and renew your books.

iDiscover

Homerton is also a contributor to the online University Library catalogue known as iDiscover.  If you want to search multiple Cambridge libraries for an item or want to see if an electronic version is available, we would recommend using iDiscover.  Please note that iDiscover does not currently show availability of our items.

Ejournals, ebooks and online databases

The University Library provides full text access to academic ejournalsebooks and online resources covering all subjects. These can be accessed on campus (and off campus with a Raven password) via http://www.homerton.cam.ac.uk/www.lib.cam.ac.uk/electronicresources/ or iDiscover.

Music Hire Service

The Music Hire Service is run in collaboration with Christ's College. Both College Libraries have large collections of instrumental and vocal music available for hire including hundreds of orchestral and choral sets. Members of Homerton and Christ's may borrow music from either library for free, and external users can also hire music at a low cost. Our hire periods are flexible to suit you. For more details and to view the catalogue please visit: http://www.christs.cam.ac.uk/current-students/library/music-hire or email library@homerton.cam.ac.uk

Welfare

Our aim is to provide a stress-free environment for studying. The library team are always happy to help, just pop in and speak to us, email library@homerton.cam.ac.uk or call 01223 747260. For those moments when you need to take a break from the books we have jigsaws and a chess set in the ground floor reading area, and during Easter term we provide squash and biscuits every week-day afternoon.

Facilities

Study space

There are over 60 work spaces in the Library, with a mixture of large shared desks and individual study carrels situated amongst our open plan shelving on all three levels of our spacious Library. There are also a number of comfortable chairs and beanbags in the reading area on the ground floor.

There are 13 Managed Cluster Service (MCS) computers in the Library. In common with most of the College, the Library offers eduroam wifi access.

Photocopying, Printing and Scanning

A photocopier is situated on ground floor which is operated by your University Card. The library has a laser printer for colour and mono printing accessible from the managed cluster service computers (PCs and MACs). Two A4 scanners are also available.
