Sport at Homerton College

New sports facilities on Long Road

Homerton College in partnership with St Marys School have created a new state of the art sports facility on Long Road. The development allows our students to discover, experience and excel in a wide range of sport and will be used for training and competition.

The facilities include:

  • Two floodlit astroturf pitches – one for hockey, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee and one for football and rugby
  • Three floodlit tennis and netball courts
  • Cricket nets
  • High jump and long jump facilities
  • Junior grass football pitch and in summer an athletics track

A pavilion with four changing rooms, a small kitchen, seating area and office/medical room is also under construction and is scheduled to be ready by September  2021.

Once completed and in support of Cambridgeshire County Council's health and well-being strategy, the facilities will also be open for community use. Working with Ingleton Wood Martindales Ltd, the Long Road scheme was designed to minimise environmental impact and the site’s overall carbon footprint.

Measures include:

  • Installation of solar panels
  • Energy-efficient lighting and floodlights
  • Protection of key wildlife corridors
  • Planting additional trees
  • Meadow planting
  • Anti-flood provision in the drainage scheme

Sports facilities on the College site

Other sports facilities at the College include a well-equipped gym and a fitness studio. The fitness studio with two mirrored walls and ballet bars can be used for yoga, pilates, martial arts, ballet and contemporary dance.

For sports that we cannot provide facilities for on-site, we use the Hills Road Sports Centre next door, which has a variety of tennis surfaces, a squash court, indoor cricket nets and a sports hall.

College gym

The College has a large gym which is open to current undergraduates, graduates, Fellows and staff.

The gym is open 24/7 and contains:

  • two treadmills
  • two bikes
  • three AMT machines with open stride
  • a cross-trainer
  • two FTS glide machines
  • a smith machine
  • a leg curl/extension

There is also a stretch area with fit balls, medicine balls and other equipment. In the side gym, which closes overnight there are four rowing machines and a weights area. There are also changing and shower facilities.

Student membership is included in termly rents. Those not living in College, staff and Fellows pay a small fee on an annual basis.

Membership forms are available on the College intranets.

College clubs and teams

Homerton has a wide variety of sports clubs and regularly fields teams at various levels in the university-wide annual ‘cuppers’ tournaments. All college sports and societies are co-ordinated through the Homerton Union of Students (HUS) and are usually known as the Griffins.

As part of the HUS JCR, they organise social events throughout the year. Football, rugby, netball, hockey, cricket, ultimate frisbee, tennis, badminton and croquet are all offered.

We welcome student suggestions for other sports not currently played in College.

Homerton College boat club

Homerton also has an active Boat Club and in 2019, at last, had a home on the Cam when Homerton contributed to the rebuilding of a new boat club in conjunction with City of Cambridge Rowing Club and St Mary’s School. This provides the boat club access to a wide variety of boats and the ability to fly the flag during 'Bumps'.  Usually, two men's and two women's eights enter Lent and May bumps and have had much success in recent years.
