Sports

You are here

Homerton has a wide variety of sports clubs and fields teams at various levels in the university wide ‘cuppers’ tournaments (with mixed success!) each year. Apart from the Boat Club, all college sports teams are coordinated by the ‘Griffins Club’- a part of the HUS JCR- which organizes social events throughout the year as well as overseeing the teams. Football, rugby, (both male and female) netball, hockey (male and female), cricket, ultimate Frisbee, tennis, badminton, croquet are all offered... and if you want any sport we don’t offer, start up a team!

Homerton also has an active Boat Club, whose recent achievements include the women's squad, racing in a new 8 thanks to generous donations, getting to within feet of blades in Lent bumps. The men's squad has been equally successful, racing for the first time in Homerton history on the Thames in the Head of the River, and getting blades in the May bumps.

In terms of sports facilities the College has a well-equipped gym, a football pitch with adjacent changing rooms  and grass tennis courts and a croquet pitch in the summer. For sports that we cannot provide facilities on site, we pop next door to Hills Road Sports Centre which has a variety of tennis surfaces, a squash court, indoor cricket nets and a sports hall. or for rugby we use pitches just up the road.

Homerton has several rooms which can be hired out for society and club meetings, including a dance studio, auditorium and drama studio. The dance studio hosts yoga, martial arts, ballet and dance groups.

Gym

From September 2017, Homerton College will have a new enlarged gym which is open to current undergraduates, graduates, Fellows and staff. Student membership is included in your rent. Those living-out, staff and Fellows pay a small fee on an annual basis. Membership forms are available on the student intranet, Nexus.

The main gym is open 24/7 and contains two treadmills, two bikes, three AMT machines with open stride, a Cross-trainer, 2 FTS Glide machines, a Smith machine and a leg curl/extension.  There is a stretch area with fit balls, medicine balls and other equipment.  In the side gym which will close overnight there are 4 rowing machines and a weights area. There are also changing and shower facilities.

Planned Sports Facilities

Homerton has a planning application in to develop 9 acres less than 1 mile from College.  The plan is to develop the best College facilities in Cambridge with a flood-lit hockey pitch; flood lit tennis/netball pitches; a flood lit rugby/football artificial pitch and facilities for athletics in the summer as well as a new Pavilion. If planning succeeds we hope to have the facilities open for the 2018/19 Academic year.
