Former Principal Professor Geoff Ward was sworn in last night as an Honorary Fellow, formalising his new and continuing relationship with the College. Geoff stepped down as Principal on 30 September, but we are delighted that, as an a Honorary Fellow, he remains a vital part of the Homerton community.
"Having served the College for eight years as Principal, I am honoured and excited to join Homerton’s small and very distinguished group of Honorary Fellows," he said. "I will aim to be an ambassador for, and enthusiastic supporter of this wonderful place, which under my successor Lord Woolley’s leadership goes from strength to strength."
At the same ceremony, the Reverend James Shakespeare, Vicar of St John the Evangelist, Hills Road, was made an Associate Fellow. The church has a longstanding connection with the College, and the Charter Choir sing Evensong there on a weekly basis in term time.
James said:
“I am delighted to be sworn in as an Associate Fellow of Homerton College, as a sign of our vital relationship, between College and local Parish Church. This relationship has developed over many years, and alongside providing a base for the Charter Choir and their magnificent choral services, St John’s is also a gateway into the local civic community in Cambridge. Our recently refurbished St John’s Centre provides a base for community groups, and we welcome Homerton students into our building, not only for spiritual purposes, but for study and refreshment, whatever their faith background.”
Professor Ventsislav Valev, Professor of Physics at the University of Bath, was also formally sworn in, having become an Associate Fellow in October, while Dr Robin Bunce, Bye-Fellow in Politics at Homerton since 2018, was sworn in as a Fellow. James Dougal and Dr Ariana Phillips-Hutton became Bye-Fellows.
