Julia Kenyon is Bye-Fellow and Director of Studies (Biological Natural Sciences) at Homerton College My research within Professor Lever's lab in the Dept of Medicine focuses on how viruses piece together different molecules in the correct ratios to form infectious particles. I'm particularly interested in how the genetic material of the virus is structured and how this structure, and changes within it, recruit a protein coat to form a viral particle. Currently I'm using a range of structural techniques to look at HIV-1, which causes AIDS, and FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus), which leads to an AIDS-like illness in many feline species. One of the aims of my research is to understand the molecular details of the assembly process, so that we can design drugs to block it. |
