These are held every Monday and Wednesday evening in the Finance Office. You can discuss your needs and problems in confidence. You may be eligible for help as the following information indicates.
The Access to Learning Funds (previously the Cambridge University Hardship Funds) are available from the University and provide help for Home students on low income who may need extra financial support for their course to stay in higher education. Payments are usually given as grants, and do not have to be repaid, although sometimes they may be given as short-term loans. Application forms will be made available from the Finance Office reception and surgeries are generally held on Mondays and Fridays (4-6pm) during full-term and subject to demand.
The College subscribes to the University of Cambridge Childcare Bursary scheme. It is important to notify the Admissions Office at Homerton if you are a student parent with dependent children so we can send you the necessary forms. If you are a PGCE student you must also inform the Faculty of Education registry. You can also ask the Senior Tutor for information about the scheme, which is means-tested. The University's Childcare Information Officer is able to offer advice and information to potential student parents, including information on finding local nurseries, childminders or after-school clubs; University facilities; financial assistance as well as advice on available bursary schemes. The following scholarships and awards are for students already accepted by Homerton.
Eight choral exhibitions are available to current students at Homerton, each carrying the value of £100 per annum. Choral exhibitioners sing in the Charter Choir, and must attend all rehearsals and services/concerts. An allowance towards singing lessons is also provided. The purpose of the University Instrumental Awards Scheme is to enable gifted players to reach a high standard of performance in chamber music. Award-holders are expected to give priority to rehearsals (about six hours a week) with their ensemble. Successful applicants receive an exhibition (a small financial honorarium), usually for three years, professional coaching is provided for all ensembles free of charge and subsidies for instrumental lessons are normally available. The Vice-Principal is able to offer advice on the wide range of University travel grants available and how to apply for them. The Pilkington Travel Fund is available to Homerton students wanting to work overseas during the long vacation for the benefit of others. A small number of Vacation Study Grants are available for students who of necessity have to do Laboratory work, fieldwork or additional study during the long vacation. Students are expected to bear part of the cost of travel themselves.
These grants are available for research students (MPhil and PhD) who need funds to help them meet the costs incurred in their research projects (travel and subsistence, conference fees etc.).
