Living in Homerton

Accommodation

Image of student accommodationThe student accomodation at Homerton is located within and around the college's fine gardens and grounds. There are 356 single study bedrooms with en-suite facilities, telephone and Internet connection points, and a further 100 standard rooms, all within easy reach of the Hall and Buttery where students eat together.  Each room is cleaned once a week, and students receive linen and towels from college every other week or every week respectively. Students also have shared kitchens, which are equipped with microwaves, toasters, hobs and fridges, as well as individual lockable cupboards.

There is also ready access to the learning, social and sporting facilities of the college which include a modern library, computer rooms, a student union room and the college bar.

Homerton College is a member of the Accreditation Network UK (ANUK), a network of professionals and organisations that promote accreditation in private rented residential accommodation.

Security Cards

Image of some college foodHomerton College has a comprehensive security system on site, comprising access control systems and CCTV. CCTV covers all of the grounds, building entrances and common areas of the College. Access control doors are in all residential buildings and key areas of the College. Upon arriving at Homerton College you will have been issued with a Homerton College Smart Card. This Smart Card will have your name, course and photograph. The Smart Card is used to gain access to required areas and identify you as a College Member. The card is for personal use only and should not be issued to anyone else. The cardholder should either escort any visitor or collect a visitors' pass from the Porters' Lodge. Misuse of your card or the resources granted upon it may lead to disciplinary action. Should you have any queries concerning the access codes for your card please contact the Porters' Lodge.

Catering

Image of some college foodHomerton provides dining facilities, Monday to Friday for lunch and dinner, and serves Saturday brunch and Sunday roast at the weekends.  The Buttery (college cafe) is open for breakfast and lunch, and serves cakes, soup, sandwiches and snacks throughout the day. In the evening, the buttery becomes the college bar, a great place for some evening socialising. The HUS run a series of events in the bar throughout the year, from pub quizzes to comedy nights.

The Dining hall

Image of the dining hallHomerton has one of the largest Victorian dining halls of all the Cambridge Colleges, and has recently been refurbished with plush crested chairs. It is lined with portraits of past Principals and hung with new Victorian style curtains. The Hall is a popular meeting place for students at lunchtime and for evening meals, and every Tuesday in term time the hall runs ‘Formal Halls’- smart, three course dinners which are a great way to celebrate birthdays, meet up with friends, or a start to a night out.  The wide variety of menus includes meat and vegetarian options which are prepared and cooked daily. Special dietary needs can be catered for. At the weekend, the Hall offers Saturday brunch (one of the most popular meals of the week!) and Sunday roast.

The Buttery

Image of a hands holding a mugOpen from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and from 12 noon to 2.30pm on a Saturday, ???? check times for teas and coffees, soft drinks, snacks, sandwiches and some hot dishes. This is often where people meet during the day for a quick break between lectures or supervisions.

 

College Bar

Image of the college barThe Bar is a hub of College social life. Here, students can meet for a drink, to play pool, try their luck on computer pub games, and compete on the Wii. The bar also has SKY TV, so all the major sports matches are shown at the weekends and in the evenings. The HUS runs a series of events here, from pub quizzes to comedy sessions to casino nights.

 

The Porters' Lodge

Image of the porters' lodgeThe College Porters offer a 24 hour service for information and security on site. Their task is to ensure that the College provides a safe and friendly environment for all College members. And we are proud to say that we have some of the friendliest porters in Cambridge!

 

IT Resources

Image of a computer screenThe College has two embedded teaching rooms for IT (also used by the Faculty of Education) and a room with 24-hour access for students' self-study, e-mail, internet or word-processing needs. All College members have access, through the College system, to an unusually wide range of educational software. A staff of one Computer Officer, three Assistant Computer Officers and three technicians supports this system.

Sports Provision

Image of a person playing sportsHomerton stands in 15 acres of gardens and sports grounds, including on-site football and hockey pitches, grass tennis courts and a squash court, as well as a dance studio. Next door, at the Hills Road Sixth Form College, there are national coaching facilities for cricket and tennis. Other sports are played off-site using other College and University facilities. Cambridge also has a large sports centre swimming pool that's in easy walking or cycling distance of Homerton. Sports Injury Clinic

Homerton College now hosts a sports injury clinic for students. This is generally held once a week on a Wednesday evening but different days and times can be arranged.

Appointments are made following assessment by Sandy, the College Nurse. The links below provides details of the organisation providing the Sports Injury clinic and the Sports' Therapist.

This is a subsidised service i.e. Homerton College pays a fixed proportion of the Sports Therapist's fee. There is a charge of £10 payable by students in cash at the time of treatment.

Drama, Music and Art

Image of a people performing a playHomerton has a well-equipped Auditorium with changing and practice rooms backstage and a dance studio. Music is an important academic subject, as is drama, and there are a range of opportunities to use College equipment for recreational as well as academic purposes. Stationery Shop

Image of the stationery shopThe HUS runs an excellent low cost stationery shop and office, which is open 10am - 2pm and 5pm - 7pm Monday to Friday, in term time. They offer services such as photocopying, laminating and binding , and sell pretty much everything you would need for your studies, along with branded Homerton college gifts and stationary. In addition, the HUS offers a storage service for overseas students- so you don’t have to lug all your things home at holiday time. And they’re all very friendly in there, so pop in to say hello!

 

Student Common Rooms

Image of a person readingThere are two common rooms for students- one for the JCR and one for the MCR- which have been recently redecorated. Both are open 24 hours a day, and are a great place for students to catch up on TV shows together, play table football, or relax on comfortable chairs. The MCR common room also has basic cooking facilities, including a fridge, kettle and microwave.

 

Laundry

There are a two coin-operated laundries available in the two main residential blocks.

 

 

 

Religious Life

Homerton is a non-denominational College and respects and encourages all normal and established religious observance of whatever faith or background.

 

 

Smoking

Homerton is a non-smoking College. Smoking is only permitted outside at a distance of 15m from any building.
