Darren Sarisky

Darren Sarisky is a Junior Research Fellow in Theology. After completing a PhD at the University of Aberdeen in 2009, Dr Sarisky became a Teaching Associate in Doctrine within the Divinity Faculty at the University of Cambridge. In that capacity, he undertook a wide variety of duties, including lecturing undergraduates, supervising the research of MPhil students, and leading a Senior Seminar on Theological Hermeneutics. In 2010, Dr Sarisky received a Junior Research Fellowship, during which he first revised his doctoral thesis for publication and is now working on his second major research project.

Research Interests

Dr Sarisky’s primary area of research is the nature and interpretation of Christian Scripture. The tack he takes in his research is to reflect on the Bible and its interpretation in two different contexts—the patristic period, especially the fourth and fifth centuries, which are a foundational era for the whole Christian tradition, and our own contemporary context—on the assumption that insights drawn from the patristic context can enrich the current discussion.

Scriptural Interpretation: A Theological Account is Dr Sarisky’s first book, and it is set to be published in 2012 by Wiley-Blackwell within its Challenges in Contemporary Theology series. The book, which is a revised version of his doctoral thesis, brings an important fourth-century church father, Basil of Caesarea, into dialogue with two leading lights in contemporary theology, Stanley Hauerwas and Rowan Williams. The text culminates with a constructive contribution to the discussion. The question on which the book focuses is what is happening, in theological terms, when the Bible is read by the church.

Dr Sarisky is currently writing his second book: its subject is the nature of theological interpretation. A great deal of energy is being directed at present into the discussion of theological exegesis, and representatives of many different sub-disciplines within Theology and Religious Studies are involved in the debate, but there is a lack of clarity regarding the defining characteristics of the enterprise itself. Dr Sarisky hopes to make a contribution there.
