Dinner with a Leader Professor Greg Clark, CBE FAcSS
Changemakers is delighted to host Homerton alumnus Greg Clark CBE FAcSS for our next instalment of Dinner with a Leader. Greg advises organisations including national governments, the OECD, and the World Bank on urban development and investment. Greg studied at Homerton from 1981 to 1986, and was HUS President from 1984 to 1985. Today, as well as his advisory work, Greg is a writer, author of ten books and numerous reports, he has worked with the BBC, Transport for London, and is the co-host of the DNA of Cities podcast.
Greg is returning to Homerton on Thursday 6 February 2025 to discuss ‘Civic Leadership in the Century of Cities'. As well as sharing his expertise and passion for urbanism, Greg will discuss his personal journey, the leadership challenges he faced, and his insights on how we can learn from failure.

Greg Clark studied at Homerton from 1981 to 1986. He was president of the Homerton Union of Students/JCR in 1984/85.
Greg Clark is now a writer, Board Chair, and Senior Advisor on cities, transport, economic development, built environment, and place leadership. He is author of 10 books and 100 reports and has worked with 400 cities around the world. He is expert advisor on the BBC World Service Series, My Perfect City, author of The Planet of Cities column for RICS, and co-host of The DNA of Cities podcast. Greg’s next book, The Century of Cities, is due for publication in Spring 2025. Greg is co-founder, with Dr Tim Moonen, of The Business of Cities.
In the UK, he is Chair of the Connected Places Catapult (CPC), the UK’s national innovation accelerator for transport, cities, and place-leadership, and Chair of the Cities Commission for Climate Investment(3Ci) which convenes city leaders and urban investors to pioneer innovative means to capitalise decarbonisation. He is a Board Member of Transport for London (TfL). He chairs TfL’s Land and Property Committee which oversees TfL’s property company: Places for London, and is a member TfL’s Finance Committee. He was previously a member of the TfL Committee for Crossrail/Elizabeth Line and chair of TfL’s Investment Committee. He is a Senior Advisor on Global Cities & Urban Innovation at New London Architecture, and Hon Prof of Cities and Innovation at Strathclyde University.
He was previously Lead Advisor, Cities & Regions, Office of Deputy Prime Minister (2004-2010), Executive Director, London Development Agency (2000-2004), MD at Greater London Enterprise, Chief Executive of the London Enterprise Agency, International Director at the London Docklands Development Corporation. He teaches regularly at LSE and University College London. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS). He was formerly Visiting Professor at University College London; City, University of London, and a Fellow at the the Local Economy Policy Unit in London.
Globally, Greg is Hon Global Fellow at the Urban Land Institute (ULI). He is former chair of the OECD LEED Forum of Cities and Regions (1996-2016) and former Global Fellow on cities and economic development at the Brookings Institution. He has advised the World Bank, European Investment Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and the HSBC Group on cities, economic development, sustainability, and financial innovation. He is currently working the Inter-American Development Bank on the economic future of the cities of the Amazon, where 47,000,000 people live.
Greg has chaired more than 20 International Advisory Boards and Committees for Cities; including New York, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Sao Paulo, Mumbai, Moscow, Vienna, Oslo, Barcelona, Turin, Toronto, Auckland, and Cape Town. He is a member of the WEF Global Future Council on Cities & Urbanisation, and a member of the Bloomberg NEF Council on Cities.
Greg was awarded a CBE for his contributions to city & regional economic development by HM Queen Elizabeth in 2016. He was awarded The John Shiels Prize by the City of Barcelona, an Hon Ambassadorship by the City of Brisbane, and the Freedom of the City of London. He is Harkness Fellow in City & Regional Economic Development and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.
