December 2024 saw the sad passing of a beloved member of the Homerton community, Professor Morag Styles.
Morag’s relationship with Homerton College spanned over 50 years, as she embarked on the PGCE Course in 1970, before teaching at the College between 1974 and 2014.
She was Primary Language Co-ordinator for some years, latterly dividing her time between research, teaching, supervision of doctoral students and co-ordinating the masters’ route, Critical Approaches to Children’s Literature at Cambridge Faculty of Education. In her lifetime she compiled many much-loved poetry anthologies for children. Morag's generous and brilliant scholarship was often expressed in inspiring and successful collaborative projects. The Caribbean Poetry Project (University of Cambridge and University of the West Indies) was one such, in which she brought together poets, academics and teachers from across the Caribbean and the UK.
Morag was also a founding member of the Philippa Pearce Steering Committee which has organized an annual lecture at Homerton College by a distinguished children’s author since 2008, and she continued to take an active interest in the Homerton Cambridge Centre for the Research and Teaching of Children’s Literature.
