The New Year’s Honours list for 2025, which recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the UK, included some familiar faces, as members of our Homerton community were recognised for their outstanding work.

Former University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Leszek 'Boris' Borysiewicz, an Honorary Fellow of Homerton College, was made Knight Grand Cross (GBE) for services to cancer research, clinical research, medicine and to charities.

Meanwhile, Homerton College alumna Dr Julie Blake (PhD Education 2013-20), was awarded the honour of Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to education. This honour was in recognition of Dr Blake’s pioneering work as co-founder and director of the nation’s premier poetry speaking competition, Poetry By Heart, which invites young people to choose a poem they love, learn it by heart, and perform it out loud.
