Motivation Reset: How to sustain our motivation as students during challenging times

Homerton Changemakers Workshop on intrinsic motivation

The path from formal schooling to the 'real world' is longer, rockier and more challenging than ever before. The question at hand is how can young people sustain their intrinsic motivation and truly thrive in a world of “unknown unknowns”. After all, we can’t change this aspect of the world, but we can change how we approach the world.

In this dynamic and highly interactive in-person workshop at Homerton College, author and Cambridge alumni, Sharath Jeevan, will debunk the common myths about the 'real world' to prepare students for an increasingly challenging post-university climate. The discussion will help students prepare for the transition to work and become not just 'job ready' but 'world ready'. They will learn how to harness their motivation throughout their own learning journeys and ensure it evolves to fit the needs of the future workforce.

Throughout the workshop, Sharath will expand on some of the key ideas of his new book, Intrinsic: A manifesto to reignite our inner drive. Intrinsic aims to catalyse a new way of thinking about our motivation through a holistic lens. It uses motivation thinking not just to diagnose the problems we are facing in our work, careers, relationships, parenting and as citizens, but to find solutions to them too. So far, the book has been receiving testimonials from a range of global thought leaders, from former Prime Ministers to the Master of Fitzwilliam College and bestselling authors such as Dan Heath and Nir Eyal.

Attendees will be offered a complimentary copy of Intrinsic and the event will be followed by intimate networking drinks.

It is a book which takes readers on a journey around the world to find practical and inspirational answers to solving our motivational crisis, harnessing ground-breaking research, from psychology and economics to philosophy and behavioural science. Sharath Jeevan helps us see how we can achieve more lasting fulfilment and success in our work, careers, relationships, parenting, and as citizens.

Intrinsic

We are in a motivational mess today. Many of us feel like we are going through the motions – as workers, managers, spouses and partners, parents and citizens. We feel jaded and unhappy with the organizations we are part of, whether that’s the company we work for or our child’s school. And some of us feel deeply alienated from the wider societies in which we live, particularly in the face of the vast social problems - from climate change to our increasingly ‘winner takes all’ world.

But life doesn’t need to be this way. Motivation thinking holds the key to this promise. Intrinsic uses motivation thinking not just to accurately diagnose these problems, but to find solutions. As a leading expert on motivation, Sharath Jeevan helps us see how we can achieve more lasting fulfilment and success in our work, careers, relationships, parenting, and as citizens. He applies the concepts of Purpose (how what we do helps others), Autonomy (our ability to positively change things) and Mastery (our sense of continually getting better) to help us see our motivation in these key life areas in a radically new light.

Intrinsic shows us how to re-frame our work so that our core Purpose is always front and centre and why taking a nurturing role in our careers can help us tackle some of the 'wicked' problems we are facing. Sharath Jeevan takes us on a journey around the world to find practical and inspirational answers to solving our motivational crisis, harnessing ground-breaking research, from psychology and economics to philosophy and behavioural science. Intrinsic shows us how we can fall back in love with our lives, and create the lives we want.
