Changemaking requires tools.
Tools for getting things done that help you transcend the limiting assumptions of systems around you. Tools for collaborating in ways that empower you and others. And tools for creating, inventing and envisaging change.
This workshop offers a deep-dive into tool building:
- deep listening - a profound skill to build relationships, collaborations, and for shifting your perspective
- collaboration styles, exploring your tendencies and learning methods for better outcomes
- experimentation to develop inventive and creative perspectives so you can envisage and make solutions.
The experience includes plenaries, small group discussion, a panel conversation, self-reflection time, creative exercises, and a practical workshop. The work will be supported by a learning framework and reading list.
As always, Changemakers doesn’t promise answers but instead works to challenge your thinking, assumptions and questions. You’ll get to do this via hands-on experience with interested and generous peers, and access to experienced faculty.
The workshop is open to all Homerton students and recent leavers (<5yrs). Limited places available to student of other colleges.
This workshop forms part of Changemakers' Core Curriculum Series focusing on Self (Michaelmas), Society (Lent), and World (Easter). You're welcome to come to one or all of the workshops and to explore the many extended elements on offer - from mentoring opportunitiesto the annual Catalyst Fund competition.

12.30-1-30pm. Panel discussion - a case study with Jessica Tayenjam, consultant, social innovator, & the first female rugby-playing, PoC, and openly queer Co-Chair of the Cambridge University Rugby Union Club.
1.30-3pm Offline. Lunch and a short self-reflection
3pm-5pm. Experimentation & Creativity - a workshop with Dr Mark Bloomfield, engineer, media expert and CEO of Turbulence
During the Workshop
You will be asked to complete short self-reflection exercises during the day (using online and offline methods). You will need access to a computer, stable wifi or phone connection, and ideally somewhere that is sufficiently quiet so you can concentrate on sometimes personal matters. If equipment and/or space is likely to be problematic, please get in touch with us.
A note on your involvement
The programme is intentionally intensive and immersive, designed to maximise the depth of experience and the insights you will gain. We ask that you commit to participating fully during the day. Not all of the work will be online - there will be breaks! - but the benefits you gain will be truly concomitant with what you put in. Please keep this in mind and come prepared to be distraction free if at all possible.
Jessica Tayenjam Consultant and social innovator
Jessica is an experienced strategist, product leader, and user researcher, specialising in innovation, cultural transformation, and new product/service development for companies of all sizes. She has worked with major brands such as HSBC, Boots, Visa, UNICEF, Dominos, British Gas and NatWest with projects across Europe, the Americas and Eastern Asia. She is also a startup advisor and have mentored a range of new ventures over the last 10 years.
She is passionate about social inclusion and sustainable business with particular areas of interest in developing women and gender diverse individuals' leadership and inclusion in the corporate space.
Dr Mark Bloomfield CEO of Turbulence
Dr. Mark Bloomfield is the Founder of Turbulence, an innovation practice focusing on Enabling Resilient Growth. Mark is committed to helping organisations implement a future-facing innovation strategy powered by data. Mark is also an advisor to several start-up businesses across multiple sectors.
In July 2022, Mark became a Fellow at Cambridge Judge Business School, University of Cambridge where his teaching and interests focus on innovation experiment. He has taught over 100 senior leaders from across the world.
Until recently, Mark was the Director of Commercial Transformation at Global Media & Entertainment. For over 10 years he delivered significant financial growth through breakthrough innovations. Furthermore, Mark established data science as core capability within Global. Whilst at Global, Mark led transformation projects across M&A & business-model innovation. He also developed Global’s commercial sustainability strategy including the delivery of key initiatives.
Prior to Global, Mark was Head of Operations Research at Thomas Cook Group, responsible for their pricing and inventory optimisation strategies.
Mark has a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Bristol where he worked with Airbus on next generation wing design.
Dr Alison Wood Academic Director, Homerton Changemakers
Alison is a Fellow of Homerton College and directs Homerton Changemakers, a pioneering programme equipping students to be wise change-agents amidst complexity and challenge. Her work takes in scholarly & popular domains, focused on the philosophy of education, the future of Universities, and ideas of modern selfhood. Right now she is turning those interests more explicitly to the role that universities must play in building educated selves and societies crucial for whole-system-thriving in the era of climate emergency. Australian born and bred, she's also a musician and has long-standing interests in arts, psychotherapy, high-performance, and institutional reform.
