All Homerton postgraduate students benefit from access to our excellent facilities and our dedicated pastoral support team. For most postgraduate students, academic work life takes place in their Departments or Faculties. This makes the College your Cambridge ‘home’, whether or not you live on-site — and 'Home' is in our name.
Facilities
Our beautiful gardens and grounds provide relaxing surroundings for work, rest, and play, and we have two dedicated postgraduate accommodation blocks, Morley House and Harrison House, situated at the back of the College site.
We aim to provide accommodation for all of our full-time first-year graduate students studying for Master’s and doctoral degrees.
Please note that we have very limited accommodation available for PGCE students and that this is strictly allocated on the basis of need.
Our spectacular new dining hall and buttery, and the Griffin bar, provide outstanding spaces in which you can eat and drink in the College, from grabbing a mid-morning coffee to attending a sumptuous Formal Hall dinner. Our warm and welcoming team works hard to ensure that all students are catered for.
Our modern and well-equipped Library is a popular study space for postgraduate students, and is open 24-7 to members of the College. As well as the main collections we also have rare book holdings with a specialism in Children’s Literature, often used by research students.
Our dedicated IT Team is available for free to Homerton students and can provide support for a variety of network, hardware and software issues.
Homerton postgraduate students join us from all over the world, and we are proud of our diverse community. Throughout the year we hold specific events for international students, and we can provide targeted support.
More information about the particular application processes for international students is available via the University.
The MCR, or Middle Common Room is the name for our dedicated postgraduate student union, which organises events and represents postgraduate students on various College committees. The MCR is also the name for the postgraduate common room itself, which is on the ground floor of Morley House. All postgraduate students, both resident and non-resident, can access the MCR.
The College provides numerous opportunities to join in with music and drama activities, including the Charter Choir, HoJo jazz ensemble, the non-auditioned Homerton Singers, Pandemonium steel pans group, and HATS dramatic society. Our music practice rooms were recently refurbished and we also have a brand new auditorium. We run an annual Performing Arts competition, as well as hosting Conducting and Accompanist scholarships.
Many students take part in sport or other College societies during their postgraduate studies: it is a fantastic way to take time out from demanding courses and to meet other members of the Homerton community. We have recently opened new sports grounds on Long Road, as well as a shared Boat House, adding to the gym, dance studio, and football pitch available on the main site.
Events
The College hosts a wide-ranging series of events throughout the academic year, from Matriculation dinners to Graduation. We hold regular Postgraduate Formal Halls on Friday evenings in addition to the whole-College Formal Halls every Tuesday during Term.
We hold regular networking events for postgraduates and Early Career Researchers, from study skills and funding workshops to our regular Research Suppers.
There is an annual Garden Party for postgraduates students, who are also warmly welcomed to many other College events and activities. In addition, Homerton MCR runs its own programme of social events throughout the year.
Support
A primary role of the College for postgraduate students is to provide personal support and guidance with any challenges which might arise during their course; and to ensure that any additional arrangements or assistance is put in place to ensure everyone can thrive. We have an in-house Community Health Advisor, Wellbeing and Counselling Consultant, Disability Liaison Officer, Finance Tutor, and Wellbeing Lead, who provide specialist support. The University central services are also available where appropriate, and we also facilitate access to other counselling services.
The Postgraduate Tutor team can help with advice on a range of personal issues, to go through your options and to direct you to specialist support – feel free to get in touch about anything which is concerning you. You will be assigned a specific Tutor who will meet with you individually, and whom you can then contact with any problems or questions you might have.
Your Tutor is there to support you from a pastoral perspective, but they will not be teaching you.
