The Role

Our Porters' Lodge is the hub of the College, where staff, students and visitors receive assistance, information and direction.  It is a vibrant and dynamic environment. The main duties include reception, security, student discipline, fire safety, mail and parcels. 

We are looking for a reliable, committed team player, with good interpersonal skills.

This is a full-time position, working an average of 37 hours per week. The Porters’ Lodge is covered 24/7, with 8-hour shifts – 7:00 – 15:00, 15:00 – 23:00 and 23:00 – 07:00. Your rest days are also in blocks together, giving you a good work life balance.

Deputy Librarian

Salary:  £26,751 to £30,962 depending on qualifications and experience

Hours: 37hrs per week; Monday to Friday; permanent post

About the role

Homerton College is seeking to recruit a full time, permanent Deputy Librarian to join the Library team. The post provides professional support and assistance to the College Librarian and is vital to the smooth and efficient operation of the Library, delivering a service to 1000+ students.

In particular, you will be responsible for:

  • maintaining the borrowable children’s literature collection of the Library (c10,000 items)
  • the social media output of the Library.
  • the creation of marketing materials and documentation for the Library.
  • the day-to-day management of the casual student helpers employed by the Library, recruiting and then monitoring their work and training.
  • deputising for the Librarian one day a week.

Based at the enquiry desk, you will be the welcoming face of the Library and therefore good interpersonal skills are essential for this customer-facing role.  You will also need to have a knowledge and enthusiasm for current children’s literature.  Previous experience in producing marketing materials and using social media in a similar context would be advantageous, as would previous management experience.

PLUMBER AND MULTI-SKILLED TRADER

Salary: £28,346 - £31,882 depending on experience - 37 hours per week

About the role

We are looking for a person to serve a varied portfolio of College properties, assisting with the monitoring and maintaining of a range of systems. The successful candidate will be working within and promoting a culture of safe working practices.  Works will range from reactive maintenance and repairs to carrying out planned preventative maintenance and minor repair and refurbishment work.  Duties will include the carrying out of plumbing repair and new installation work internally and externally throughout all College property and being responsible for nominated PPM work, particularly with a plumbing association including but not limited to temperature checks, drain and gutter clearance, services condition reporting, flushing and filter maintenance.

About you

This position will suit candidates who have a qualification in plumbing to NVQ Level 2 or equivalent and experience of maintenance work, installation and repair. In addition, you will have:

  • Current knowledge of relevant legislation and Health and Safety requirements
  • Ability to use IT equipment
  • Current clean, valid driving licence
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Strong communication skills across many levels and ability to develop good working relationships
  • Ability to prioritise workloads both short and long term, to plan own work and to be able to work to deadlines
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Ability to also present plans for further improvements within your own remit and propose improvements departmentally
  • A flexible approach and willingness to embrace change
  • Good level of general fitness and the ability to climb ladders

Gardener (Part Time)

Salary between £21,590 - £22,779 (pro rata) depending on experience

We are looking for an experienced Gardener required for a part time role (22.5 hours per week/3 days); 3 days during the working week Monday to Friday to work as part of a small team, planting and maintaining the College’s 25 acres of landscaped gardens, sports grounds and parkland. 

Applicants will need to be experienced gardeners and have a proven track record in amenity horticulture. This role would suit someone who wishes to work reduced hours within a Cambridge College.

Domestic Assistant

Kitchen Porter - Casual

As part of our catering and conference team, you will be expected to undertake cleaning duties including operating the automatic dishwasher, cleaning kitchen equipment and other general rostered cleaning tasks.

You will also be expected to receive the daily deliveries of food and beverages. Checking that they are being received, recorded and put away correctly.

You should be enthusiastic and hardworking. Some experience of this type of work would be useful  but full training will be given.
