College Lectureship and Fellowship in Economics

Contract:         Full-time or part-time (at least 0.5 FTE)

Salary range:  £33,813 - £41,542 (pro rata if applicable)

Homerton College invites applications for a full or part-time (at least 0.5 FTE) College Lectureship and Fellowship in Economics with effect from 1 October 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter (some flexibility possible for the right candidate). The person appointed will take responsibility for some of the Directing of Studies and some of the core teaching for undergraduates taking the Economics Tripos at Cambridge University. They will also take a lead role in Admissions for Economics and must be available for meetings of the inter-college admissions pool if required.

About the College

Homerton College was founded in London in 1768.  It has been a College in the University of Cambridge since 2010. Homerton is a large, mixed College with 600 undergraduate members and a similar number of postgraduates. As a college, we are passionate about widening social participation in the opportunities offered by a Cambridge education, and have the most diverse population of undergraduate students of any Cambridge college. The College is situated to the south of the city centre and has attractive buildings and grounds close to the railway station. The College currently admits about 8-10 students per year in Economics, though may increase this number in future years.

About the role

The salary scale for College Lecturer appointments is on the National Spine from Point 28-35, £33,813 - £41,542 (pro rata if applicable) and is pensionable under USS. Post holders also serve as College Teaching Officers, and are eligible for title of Assistant College Professor. Service as director of studies is separately remunerated.

The post will be available for three years, with the possibility of further renewal.  The first eleven months of the appointment will probationary with a review in the tenth month of employment. During the probationary period the College will ask a senior Fellow to act as a mentor to the new College Lecturer. Salaries are incremented annually: after two annual increments there will be a further review by the Fellowship Committee of Council, which is intended to monitor progress before the College Lecturer can proceed further up the salary scale. There is a promotion scheme to Senior College Lecturer (Associate College Professor) available to post-holders after 5 years of service.

The person appointed will be elected to a Fellowship at Homerton College, coterminous with the qualifying office of College Lecturer. Fellows share collective responsibility for the running of the College, as members of the College’s Governing Body and are expected to contribute in other ways too, e.g. through appropriate College Committees. The person appointed will have use of a room/office in College, a laptop and printer and research allowance of £1000 p/a and additional £2,000 p/a for publication subventions and fees upon request. Fellows are also offered the customary dining rights.

The person appointed would be encouraged to participate fully in the intellectual and social life of both the College and the University of Cambridge Faculty of Economics. It is common for College Teaching Officers to contribute to the teaching of Faculty lecture courses within their area of interest, whether at undergraduate or postgraduate level. It has been found that this usefully extends their range of experience and integrates them more fully into the Faculty’s work within the Collegiate University. Details about the Faculty may be found at www.econ.cam.ac.uk.

Opportunities may exist at a future time for any successful applicant to apply competitively for lectureships advertised in the University of Cambridge in their area of speciality.

Duties of the role

College Lecturers are expected to supervise undergraduates reading for the Economics Tripos and to help select students from among those applying to read the subject, and, normally, to engage in research in Economics. A full-time College Lecturer would be expected to provide up to twelve hours of supervision per week during Full Term or 240 hours across the teaching year, for students at Homerton or possibly other colleges. The college would be willing to consider highly qualified candidates interested in a substantive part-time role: part-time workloads would be assigned proportionately.  The post-holder would be joining Dr Juliana Cavalcanti who leads Economics within the college.

Applicants should normally be able to teach at least three subjects forming part of the Economics Tripos at the University of Cambridge. The College’s needs lie in particular in the following areas: Microeconomics and Quantitative Methods.  Further information on the Economics Tripos can be found at www.econ.cam.ac.uk.

Supervision in a subject involves meeting with students in small groups, setting and marking an essay (or other piece of work), for which the supervisor provides a reading list, broadening students’ perspective on the subject and providing a termly written progress report. Selection of applicants for admission commonly involves conducting interviews with each applicant, reading written work and setting a task for applicants to complete at interview.

As a Director of Studies, a College Lecturer has formal responsibility for advising students studying Economics, for arranging appropriate supervisors for each course and for reviewing students’ progress, particularly through individual meetings at the beginning and end of each term. The Director of Studies carries particular responsibility for admissions, and represents the College at inter-college subject moderation meetings. He or she advises the College Librarian on what books should be held in the College Library. As Director of Studies, a College Lecturer will be paid a core fee of £790, plus £124 p/a per student.

Further advice on the post can be obtained from Dr Penny Barton, Senior Tutor of Homerton pb29@cam.ac.uk, or Dr Juliana Cavalcanti (jgc29@cam.ac.uk).
