Extenuating circumstances: Information for offer holders with problems and/or interruptions to studies after January, during examinations or other circumstances that may affect studies

Offer holders who have their studies interrupted or affected by short-term illness, a short-term extenuating circumstance (one that the College is not already aware of), or who encounter a problem in their exams are encouraged to ask their UCAS referee to contact the Admissions Office via email to provide details of the situation. Once received, this information will be added to the offer holder's file.

Wherever possible we would ask that this information be received directly from the offer holder's UCAS referee. Where information is received from school staff who are not the offer holder's UCAS referee and/or the parent/guardian of an offer holder we will need to make contact with the offer holder to receive their consent for this information to be added to their file. Where information is received from the offer holder directly, we will ask that the offer holder's UCAS referee contacts the Admissions Office via email to corroborate the information.

Please note that details of extenuating circumstances must be received by the college before 1 July 2024 in order for this disruption to be considered prior to the confirmation period.

Information if you have spent time in Local Authority Care

If you have spent time in local Authority Care, please send an email to the Admissions Office at the College, so that we are aware that this is relevant to you as one of our offer holders. This information is held in strict confidence by the College and University. We welcome applications from all backgrounds, and care experienced students and care leavers may have specific concerns when considering or starting university, and it’s important to us that you feel supported during this time. There is a lot of support available at Cambridge, so please have a look at the information on the University website about care experienced students and College Welfare. You are also welcome to contact the Realise Team directly, if helpful.

Information for Estranged Students

If you’re an estranged student, it would be helpful for the College and University to know this, to ensure that you receive all of the support available to you. This information is held in strict confidence by the College and University. Please send an email to the Admissions Office at the College, so that we are aware that this is relevant to you as one of our offer holders. As an estranged student at Cambridge, you may be eligible for additional support, similar to the support care leavers receive – see the support for care-experienced students page for more information.

Concrete Rose University Mentoring Scheme:

Concrete Rose is a local Cambridge-based organisation that specialises in supporting vulnerable young people (16-23) including care leavers, unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, young parents and those at risk of homelessness. In partnership with the Widening Participation Team at Cambridge University, Concrete Rose delivers a mentoring scheme for students who are care-experienced and/or estranged from family. Local, adult, mentors act in a voluntary capacity providing pastoral care, support, advice and guidance to students via one-to-one sessions. All mentors have been recruited in line with safer recruitment practices and receive thorough training and on-going support. One-to-one mentor sessions include coffee catch-ups, dog walks and cooking sessions.  In the words of one student "It's not just about support when things are difficult but celebrating together when things go well”.
