HOMERTON WELCOMES Dr Georgie Horrell as Senior Tutor, and Dr Junius Olivier as the new Deputy Senior Tutor.

Dr Horrell began her new role at the beginning of January, moving from her role as Deputy Senior Tutor following the retirement of Dr Penny Barton.

Dr Olivier took up his new role at the start of February, joining from the London School of Economics, where he was Undergraduate Tutor.

Dr Horrell has almost a two decade long association with Homerton and was previously Director of Studies in Education and College Teaching Officer in Literatures in English and Education, before becoming Admissions Tutor and then deputy to Dr Barton. She is also a Fellow.

She completed a BA Hons at the University of Cape Town during the Apartheid era in South Africa, an experience which she says provided an education in social and political justice, as well as the critical value of student voice. Her PhD in southern African postcolonial literature was gained at New Hall (now Murray Edwards College). Subsequent research has offered opportunities to work with poets and educators in the Caribbean as well as South Africa.

“I am enormously privileged to work within the community at Homerton", says Dr Horrell, "a College which has so generously offered me a wealth of experience and a depth of belonging. I hope to play a key role in enabling Homerton to take a lead in rich diversity, wide inclusivity as well as in academic excellence.”

Dr Horrell and Dr Oliver

Dr Olivier is a proud native of Saint Lucia, beginning his academic path at the University of the West Indies, where he pursued undergraduate and master's degrees in economics.

His research delved into the colonial origins of economic underperformance in post-colonial countries of the former British West Indies, a topic that not only stimulated his intellectual curiosity but also holds deep personal significance.

His time at the LSE allowed him to share his knowledge and insights with the next generation of economists.

He is eager to contribute to the academic and personal growth of our students, drawing on his rich background and experiences to inspire and guide students in their own pursuits.
