Changemakers: Educating for a Thriving World

Changemakers amplifies your degree so you're ready to make a true difference in the world. With leadership, insight, self-awareness, understanding of complexity, and powerful mindsets and skills.

What is Changemakers?

Changemakers is an extracurricular, multidisciplinary program, unique to Homerton College, which amplifies your degree. Changemakers helps you explore your sense of purpose, your strengths and values. It builds the skills and connections to help you make a difference. The program addresses the challenges of our time: the climate emergency, growing inequality and political instability.

Changemakers is built around the idea that long-term system transformation is possible with:

  • a strong sense of SELF connected to others and places
  • skill in being in SOCIETY with awareness, vision, compassion and effectiveness
  • and a pragmatic, powerhouse of cross-disciplinary understanding about our WORLD
The Changemakers Model

Programme

All Changemakers events  are open to Homerton students and recent alumni whatever your degree. The program is flexible, so you can come to as many or as few Changemakers events as you wish: nothing is compulsory. There is no assessment.

Regular parts of the programme include:

  • The Annual Residential: an immersive series of workshops, seminars and events, helping you build a toolkit for positive change. An intensive exploration of the core curriculum of self and society in the world.
  • Changemaker Conversations: informal seminars and speaker events, addressing big questions. They are an opportunity to network with activists, artists, innovators, scientists, politicians, and film makers.
  • Dinner with a Leader: the opportunity meet a noted changemaker over dinner in College.
  • Changemakers Catalyst Fund: offers grants of up to £2000 and mentoring to support initiatives led by Homerton students. The Catalyst fund supports projects promoting progressive change including social enterprise, start-ups, creative projects or campaigns, in any field - from tech to arts, politics or business.
  • The Mentoring Programme: one-to-one support from an experienced mentor - often a Homerton alumni. An opportunity to discuss career options, seek advice on next steps or job applications, and gain new perspectives.
  • Coaching Circles: small peer-to-peer groups that provide a safe space to tackle academic challenges through deep listening, structured questioning, and collective reflection.

Together, these elements work to build your tool kit, height in your understanding and help you connect the personal to societal impact. It is also a great way to work with people from other disciplines and in other year groups, to extend your network of like-minded visionaries.
