Happy Doctor Who Day

Homerton Library welcomes donation of original Doctor Who scripts to the collection

On the 60th anniversary of the first episode of Doctor Who being aired on the BBC, Dr Robin Bunce, Fellow in Politics at Homerton College, has donated four Doctor Who scripts to the College Library. Homerton College Library has a number of special collections, the most notable of which are the Children's Literature Collection and the Multimedia Collection.

Robin explained: “My donation includes the scripts for the episodes “Timelash” and “Remembrance of the Daleks”. One of the other scripts is from Sylvester McCoy‘s first ever story as the Doctor - provisionally entitled “Strange Matter“, but broadcast as "Time and the Rani". The scripts are camera scripts: they were used for the final shoot of each episode. They belonged to my Dad, Roger Bunce, who worked for the BBC from 1965 to 2010. The scripts are available digitally on the Doctor Who Season 22 Blu-Ray Box Set. Happy Doctor Who day!”

Robin’s father Roger Bunce was a camera operator for Doctor Who. He joined the BBC in 1965 and focussed on special effects camerawork. In the 1960s he experimented with luminous overlay - a forerunner of Colour Separation Overlay (Chroma Key) and in the 1970s he was a pioneer of CSO, using it on productions such as Doctor Who and in the 1980s he specialised in Scene Sync technology and from the nineties he helped develop CGI camerawork. His other work for the BBC included Blake's 7, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and he was also a Director and Writer on Jackanory. Roger Bunce sadly passed away in 2021 and the donation is made in his memory.
