In 2018 Lord Simon Woolley was appointed by then Prime Minister Theresa May to create and lead the UK Government’s pioneering Race Disparity Unit. The Unit collects, analyses and publishes data on how crime, education and health are affected by ethnicity. Lord Woolley was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in June 2019 and was created a life peer in December of the same year. He sits as a crossbencher in the House of Lords.
Theresa May was a special guest at Homerton Colleges' Charter Dinner in summer 2022.
Theresa May and Lord Woolley were reunited for the evening by Cambridge Literary Festival in an event about the former Prime Minister’s new book The Abuse of Power a searing exposé of injustice and an impassioned call to exercise power for the greater good.
Lord Woolley commented “A great evening of absorbing and challenging conversation with former Prime Minister Theresa May exploring her new book The Abuse of Power. One of the things that are central to the former Prime Minster is that first and foremost integrity in public office should mean that we are there to serve the public for the greater good. When it becomes serving of self, and of vested interest it quickly becomes the abuse of power. I felt pleased and honoured to be part of that discussion.”
