Deputy Librarian

Full time - 37 hours per week

Salary range:  SCP 20-SCP 25; £27,980-£32,332 (depending on qualifications and experience)

Homerton College is seeking to recruit a full time, permanent Deputy Librarian to join the Library team. The Deputy Librarian provides professional support and assistance to the College Librarian and is vital to the smooth and efficient operation of the Library, delivering a service to 1000+ students.

In particular, you will be responsible for:

  • maintaining the borrowable children’s literature collection of the Library (c10,000 items)
  • the social media output of the Library
  • the creation of marketing materials and documentation for the Library
  • the day-to-day management of the casual student helpers employed by the Library, recruiting and then monitoring their work and training
  • deputising for the Librarian.

Based at the enquiry desk, you will be the welcoming face of the Library and, therefore, good interpersonal skills are essential for this customer-facing role.  You will also need to have a knowledge and enthusiasm for current children’s literature.  Previous experience in producing marketing materials and using social media in a similar context would be advantageous, as would management experience.

A Basic DBS will be required to be obtained.

Archive Assistant

Hours: 15 hours/week

Duration of contract: 12 months

We are looking to fill the position of a part-time Archive Assistant on a fixed-term basis for 12 months.

You will create records on the ArchiveSpace catalogue, to provide an on-line catalogue for the Homerton College Archive; working to monthly targets to maintain up to date and accurate records. You will also assist the College Archivist and Librarian with duties as required.

You will have experience of working with archives and experience of handling paper-based archival material with excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach.

A Basic DBS will be required to be obtained.

Conference Summer Set Up and AV Support Assistant (Temporary)

Hours: 37 hours/week (five days out of seven)

Rate of Pay: £11.44/hour plus 12.07% holiday pay

Contract period: Ideally early June 2024 through to early/mid Sept 2024.

We are seeking a hardworking customer-orientated person to help us deliver an excellent operational set up service to both our College and Conference Guests.

Flexibility, a can-do/hands-on attitude and a willingness to turn your hand to a wide variety of tasks to support us with providing an excellent customer service are required.

Ideally, you must be available for the entire summer season - start date beginning of June to allow for training period.

The role is full time (37 hours a week) (usually 0800-1600 but shift pattern could be anything between 0700 and 1800); 5 out of 7 days.  Weekend cover will be required.

Tasks to include:

  • Assisting the Meetings Coordinator role with daily room set ups and clearance during summer months and taking on reception duties, if required, to support the wider team.
  • Liaising with the catering operations teams, ensuring good communication is maintained with kitchen and Front of House teams as per up to date departmental information, particularly on the Kinetics (Kx) system.
  • Attending a weekly room set up meeting to ensure cohesion of cover.
  • Dealing with on-site visitors to conference reception area with all related tasks when needed.
  • Assistance with preparation, printing and installation of all required internal and external signage.
  • Updating catering information on Kx, information boards in kitchen and in print where needed.
  • Menu preparation, assisting with other miscellaneous on-site client event administration.
  • Kinetics - updating daily.
  • Attendance at all necessary department meetings and follow through as necessary (Kx, minutes, issuing updates).
  • Working closely with the Front of House Managers/Supervisors to ensure rooms are ready for customers.
  • Assisting the Head of Conference and wider team, as required, upon request.
  • Setting up check-in areas as needed and assisting, if required, with preparation of all necessary paperwork/envelopes/keys.
  • Production of all daily required signage, menus and internal documentation, once trained.

Summer Events Administrative Assistant (Temporary)

Hours: 37 hours/week (five days out of seven)

Rate of Pay: £11.44/hour plus 12.07% holiday pay

Contract period: Ideally early June 2024 through to early/mid Sept 2024.

We are seeking a hardworking customer-orientated person to support the Events Team to deliver an excellent conference service to our conference guests during the summer season. We require a friendly positive person with the ability to use their own initiative; the skills to flex service as required to suit customer needs; able to demonstrate a can-do attitude and a willingness to turn their hand to a wide variety of tasks.

The role is full-time (37 hours a week); any five days out of seven (some early starts required - shift patterns will typically be anything between 8.00 am – 6.00 pm) but will include some weekends, where needed, for check-in work.

Tasks to include:

  • Coverage of the reception desk; supporting the wider team with taking calls; responding to client enquiries in person; showing clients to varied locations; taking messages and following up with appropriate personnel.
  • Assisting with email enquiries within the external and internal inbox as needed.
  • Inputting and updating information into the Kinetics Room Booking system.
  • Liaising with catering operational teams; ensuring good communication is maintained with kitchen and Front of House teams as per up to date departmental information, particularly on the Kinetics (Kx) system.
  • Clarifying all booking information, inclusive of appropriate budget code and Risk Assessments - if required - and confirming back to enquiry.
  • Dealing with initial telephone event enquires and fielding to necessary staff, taking messages, contacting current staff/management around the grounds by phone.
  • Assistance with menus, signs, name cards and table plans etc as required.
  • Acting as a welcome /initial contact source for, as well as dealing with, customers at the reception desk. Producing printing, supporting requests and adjusting bookings if needed.
  • Updating catering information on Kx, information boards in kitchen and in print where needed.
  • Supporting the Events Teams with checking in guests via the Porters Lodge on large arrival dates at weekends during the summer.
  • Assisting the Event team or Head of Conference as required.

Senior Chef de Partie

Job Title: Senior Chef de Partie

Department: Conference and Catering

Hours: Permanent; full time; 37 hours per week; working  5 shifts over 7 days

Salary: up to SCP 23  £30,488.00 per annum depending on experience

We are looking to recruit a Senior Chef de Partie to join our Conference and Catering team assisting and supporting the delivery of food and beverages to our students, Fellows and staff as well as our conference and banqueting guests.

You should be passionate about food and able to contribute to the high standards our customers expect.

JOB FUNCTION/PURPOSE:

To manage all food production areas ensuring the preparation and cooking of all food for students, staff, functions and Hospitality to the required standard.

To ensure the prompt and efficient operation of all services at the required times and to help maintain a clean and hygienic working environment which meets the Colleges standards.

MAIN DUTIES INCLUDE:

1. Food Preparation 80%

  • Support the menu planning process including costings, providing support to the Head Chef - maximising gross profit and minimising wastage; using seasonal and local produce where possible. To control the menu cycle and  assist in the planning  menus for function catering.
  • Ensure individuals on special diets or with specific cultural needs are catered for and that choice is also available, when overseeing food production.
  • Contribute to the production of standard recipes for each dish, to ensure consistency and clear guidance for each Chef de Partie.
  • Assist in ordering, purchasing and stock control, providing guidance and sharing good practice approaches with the Head Chef and Kitchen team.
  • Ensure that all food is produced within the established cost criteria for the catering unit and complies with the specified standards, with emphasis on healthy production method, presentation, garnishing and flavour.
  • Maintain high standards of presentation and display through monitoring and regular feedback.
  • Provide guidance to the Chef De Parties, as required, in relation to cooking methods and practices to ensure the best results.
  • Ensure that recipes and working methods are followed.
  • Support the use of locally sourced food products and be proactive in finding ways to reduce the carbon footprint of catering services.
  • Monitor and record daily wastage.
  • Keep up with current food trends, retaining an awareness of customer needs.
  • Ensure that the Catering stores and other areas of potential loss are secured at all times.
  • Ensure that that the counter presentation, back-up and service is overseen everyday by the kitchen team.
  • Observe all health and safety at work regulations as set out by Homerton College in accordance with its statutory obligations.

2. Health & Safety and Hygiene 5%

  • Contribute to the responsibility for the safety and hygiene operations of the kitchen and ancillary areas, ensuring that statutory and the college regulations are adhered to by all members of staff and visitors.
  • Ensure that procedures for the reporting of accidents and incidents (including environmental incidents) are adhered to.
  • Undertake immediate remedial action following reports of any unsafe practices or broken machinery/equipment.
  • Ensure correct use, maintenance and cleaning of equipment; ensuring all kitchen staff use equipment as instructed through relevant training and observing safe practices, so that accidents are avoided.
  • Undertake Food Hygiene training as required.
  • Follow COSHH procedures.
  • Maintain a high standard of personal and food hygiene to comply with statutory and University requirements.
  • Ensure high standards of cleanliness are maintained in all kitchen and related areas.
  • Carry out record keeping as necessary to ensure compliance with Food Safety regulations. Overall responsibility for maintaining records and ensuring all checks have been carried out, taking remedial action if necessary.
  • Ensure HACCP processes are followed and recorded as required.
  • Ensure all aspects of security, fire and emergency procedures are carried out.
  • Trained in emergency evacuation of the building.
  • Trained in safe use of fire extinguishers.

3. Operational Management 5%

  • Ensure that only top-quality raw materials are provided by nominated suppliers and used in the preparation of dishes.
  • Ensure prompt service of all meals and services at the required times to the specified standard and to provide customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure that all deliveries are checked on arrival and stored to comply with statutory regulations.
  • Ensure that the Catering stores and other areas of potential loss are secured at all times.
  • Ensure that that the counter presentation, back-up and service is overseen everyday by the kitchen team.

4. Customer Care 5%

  • Provide high standards of customer care, so that the reputation of the college is enhanced and sales targets achieved.
  • Monitor standards and identify solutions to problems to ensure a high-quality service.
  • Provide superior knowledge on allergies and advice for special diets.

5. Any Other Duties

  • Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be requested.
  • Attend training courses as required.
  • Maintain an awareness of, and understand the practical application of, the Environmental Policy and ensure good environmental practice is adhered to in all catering activities e.g. waste management, energy efficiency.
  • Prepare and assist at any special function which, on occasions, will be outside of normal working hours.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications and Knowledge:

  • C & G 706 - 3 or equivalent NVQ qualification.
  • Management qualification and food hygiene certificate or equivalent.
  • Substantial knowledge of current relevant legislation governing catering operations / practices.
  • Knowledge of EPOS and catering software.
  • Good working knowledge of health and safety procedures including HACCP.
  • Good working knowledge of current food trends and special dietary requirements.

Skills:

  • Good display, product and menu development skills.
  • Effective relationship management skills.
  • Excellent technical skills.
  • Self-motivated, good organiser, planner and able to prioritize.
  • Demonstrable experience of interpretation of financial data to assess performance and guide decision making.

Executive Chef

The College’s Catering Department provides catering services across the entire college community for students who live in and outside of College, staff and Fellows as well as a conference business and other external guests. The offering includes the daily breakfast, lunch and dinner services, formal dinners and events as well as the Buttery and Bar.

The Executive Chef will be involved in this very exciting opportunity at the College, where the Catering Department is looking to develop to new heights, where all ideas and opportunities will be considered and pursued to really make the department standout from what has historically been considered the norm for similar establishments. The Executive Chef will be responsible for the Back of House operation, as well as working very closely with the Catering Manager to ensure the whole department is collaborating and working in unison. It is hoped the two roles will expand the current departments’ offering to create something very modern and unique amongst the Cambridge Colleges and beyond. There will be great importance placed on menus that include sustainably sourced, fresh seasonal and local produce wherever possible, respecting all ingredients used, with a keen emphasis on our environmental responsibilities.

The Executive Chef will lead and manage the Back of House team, will implement the appropriate structures, systems and processes required to ensure the department has the base to build from. They will oversee the financial performance to ensure effective controls and budgeting is in place, as well as all aspects of legal compliance.

The role will work closely with the Conference and Events team to really drive the commercial revenue opportunities and partnership with other organisations that will work together with us moving forward.

The role will also work closely with the Assistant Bursar, various student bodies and academic staff members and will be a key player and driving force behind what should be a very exciting time for the department and the College.

Casual Bar Staff

We are looking for hardworking and motivated Casual Bar Staff to join our busy team in our new purpose-built Griffin Bar preparing drinks and providing excellent customer service to our students, staff, Fellows and visitors to the College.

Casual Catering Staff

The role will involve a variety of tasks, from working in the College’s dining hall to serving at events, such as formal dinners, conferences and graduations.
