The Yukon Assignment (2018) A father and son canoe 500 miles across the frozen Canadian wilderness and depend on each other for survival. A fascinating insight into this landscape and the challenges of the natural world as well as ideas about discovery and exploration.

Exit the North Pole (2022) has been described as the boldest polar expedition of our times. Two explorers, Borge Ousland and Mike Horn skied 1500 miles across the polar ice cap, battling darkness and extreme weather conditions. Their goal was to investigate the extent of the melting Arctic ice floes. A gripping story of exploration, danger, fear and our warming planet.

A great way to build up a general knowledge about the planet is to watch David Attenborough’s television programmes. ‘Seven Worlds, One Planet’ took a regional look at the globe and is a great introduction to geographical issues. Similarly, Steve Backshall’s ‘Expedition’ combines travel and adventure with knowledge about key environmental issues. Probably the very best introduction to geographical issues is the recently released ‘Our Changing Planet’ BBC series. This programme will be shown once a year for seven years to chart the extraordinary changes in the world’s most threatened ecosystems and- crucially- the possible solutions. This focus on the most vulnerable habitats on the planet. It has been described as one of the most visionary and technologically challenging projects ever attempted. This huge effort will provide us with invaluable information about how the planet is affected by humans.
